Extraction optimization of total triterpenoids from Jatropha curcas leaves using response surface methodology and evaluations of their antimicrobial and antioxidant capacities Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Wei,Lei; Zhang,Wei; Yin,Li; Yan,Fang; Xu,Ying; Chen,Fang.
Background Triterpenoids are multifunctional secondary metabolites in plants. But little information is available concerning the actual yield, optimal extraction method and pharmacologic activity with regard to triterpenoids from Jatropha curcas leaves (TJL). Hence, response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the extraction parameters. The effects of three independent variables, namely liquid-to-solid ratio, ethanol concentration and extraction time on TJL yield were investigated. TJL obtained by silica column chromatography was tested against bacterial and fungal species relevant to oral disease and wounds through broth microdilution. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and...

Free-radical scavenging capacity and antioxidant properties of some selected onions (Allium cepa L.) and garlic (Allium sativum L.) extracts BABT
Benkeblia,Noureddine.
The radical scavenging activity (RAS), chain-breaking activity, H2O2-scavenging, reducing capacity and total phenolics of four types of onions (Green onion, Yellow, Red and Purple) and garlic were investigated. Total phenolics varied from 30 mg (green onion) to 49 mg.100 g-1 fresh weight (garlic). Garlic extract showed the highest RAS, while green onion showed the lowest one. The chain-breaking activity of green onion extract was higher (0.48) than garlic extract (0.029). Chain-breaking activity of yellow, red and purple onion extracts was 0.19, 0.048 and 0.032 respectively. However, heating treatment (90 ºC, 3h) caused an increase in this activity. Low ability of green onion extract to scavenge hydrogen peroxide was noted (35%), whereas high ability was...

Role of pH on antioxidants production by Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis BJM
Ismaiel,Mostafa Mahmoud Sami; El-Ayouty,Yassin Mahmoud; Piercey-Normore,Michele.
Abstract Algae can tolerate a broad range of growing conditions but extreme conditions may lead to the generation of highly dangerous reactive oxygen species (ROS), which may cause the deterioration of cell metabolism and damage cellular components. The antioxidants produced by algae alleviate the harmful effects of ROS. While the enhancement of antioxidant production in blue green algae under stress has been reported, the antioxidant response to changes in pH levels requires further investigation. This study presents the effect of pH changes on the antioxidant activity and productivity of the blue green alga Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis. The algal dry weight (DW) was greatly enhanced at pH 9.0. The highest content of chlorophyll a and carotenoids...

Total phenolic compounds, flavonoids and antioxidant activity in the flowers of Crataegus spp. from México Agrociencia
García-Mateos,Rosario; Aguilar-Santelises,Leonor; Soto-Hernández,Marcos; Nieto-Angel,Raúl; Kite,Geoffrey.
There are a number of medicinally active phytochemicals isolated from hawthorn with most of the data generated in studies of those species that are native to Europe and Asia. Comparatively little is known about the North American, specifically the Mexican Crataegus species. The objective of this study was to evaluate phenolic compounds, flavonoids and antioxidant activity of extracts of flowers from six Mexican accessions of Crataegus in order to contribute to the chemistry of the Germplasm Bank accessions at the Universidad Autonóma Chapingo. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method and the flavonoids were identified by HPLC-MS. Quercetin- 3-O-glucoside, quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside, quercetin...
